🩸 Understanding Insulin: The Most Misunderstood Hormone and How It Impacts Your Energy, Fat Loss, and Health

Ever felt like no matter how well you eat, you still crash mid-afternoon or find yourself raiding the cupboards for something sweet after dinner? You’re definitely not alone.

According to Dr. Pradip Jamnadas, who recently appeared on The Diary of a CEO podcast, one of the biggest reasons for those crashes, cravings, and energy dips might be related to insulin â€” a hormone that most of us have heard of, but few truly understand.

🔍 What Is Insulin and Why Does It Matter?

Insulin’s main job is to help move sugar (glucose) from your bloodstream into your cells so it can be used for energy. It’s essential for life — without it, your body can’t properly regulate blood sugar levels.

The issue? In our modern lifestyle, insulin rarely gets a break.

We snack between meals, sip on coffee with milk or oat drinks, grab a protein bar after training, or unwind with a glass of wine in the evening — all of which keep insulin levels switched on.

When insulin stays elevated for long periods of time, your body never gets the signal to rest, reset, or burn stored energy efficiently. Over time, this can lead to what Dr. Jamnadas calls â€śinsulin toxicity.”

⚠️ What Happens When Insulin Stays High Too Long

Chronically elevated insulin can quietly create a ripple effect throughout the body:

🩸 Increased blood clot risk â€“ constant high insulin can damage vessel walls, making blood more likely to clot.
🔥 Inflammation â€“ long-term inflammation can show up as sore joints, low energy, or stubborn fat gain.
⚙️ Metabolic slowdown â€“ your body becomes less efficient at using fat for fuel, making fat loss much harder.
đź’¤ Energy crashes â€“ you might feel “wired but tired,” experience mid-afternoon slumps, or crave sugar late at night.

It’s a slow process that builds over time — but the good news is, you can reverse it with a few consistent habits.

🧠 How to Support Healthy Insulin Function

Here are some simple, science-backed habits that can help you regain control over your energy, hunger, and metabolism:

âś… Space out your meals. Try to leave 3–5 hours between eating. This allows insulin levels to fall, giving your body time to burn stored energy.

âś… Prioritise protein and fibre. Starting your meals with protein helps slow the rise in blood sugar and keeps you fuller for longer.

âś… Train regularly. Strength training and conditioning (like your CrossFit sessions!) improve insulin sensitivity, meaning your body needs less insulin to do its job.

âś… Sleep well. Even one poor night’s sleep can make your body more insulin-resistant the next day. Aim for 7–9 hours of good-quality rest.

âś… Experiment with fasting. For some people, adopting an 18:6 fasting/eating window (18 hours fasted, 6 hours of eating) can be a powerful way to reduce overall insulin exposure — but this should always be approached gradually and with professional guidance.

💬 It’s Not About Going Extreme

You don’t have to cut carbs, skip meals, or overhaul your entire diet overnight.
It’s about working with your body’s natural rhythm â€” giving insulin a chance to reset so that your energy, focus, and metabolism can thrive again.

The key, as always, is consistency. Small daily habits — spacing meals, moving regularly, sleeping well — create big changes over time.
