Finding the Sweet Spot: Staying Consistent Over Christmas (Without Going Full Grinch)

Ah, Christmas.
That magical time of year where coffee mysteriously becomes 80% Baileys, Quality Streets breed on every surface, and even the most committed lifters start questioning whether “mince” pies counts as a complete protein.

It’s also the time when two versions of you usually show up:

1. “I’m not missing a single session, ever. Even on Christmas Day. I’ll run to my nan’s house.”
2. “See you in January. I’ve merged with the sofa and become one with the mince pies.”

This blog is about finding the sweet spot in between.
Because the goal over Christmas isn’t perfection — it’s balance.

Why Consistency Still Matters (Even in December)

Yes, it’s a busy month. Yes, routines get messy.
But here’s the truth:

You don’t need perfectly consistent training — you just need some consistency.

A few workouts a week, a couple of walks, and making decent choices most of the time will keep you:

  • Feeling good
  • Sleeping better
  • Managing stress
  • Avoiding the “January I’ve-forgotten-how-to-move” feeling
  • Building on the progress you’ve already made

Consistency isn’t about strictness — it’s about maintaining momentum.

But Here’s the Flip Side: You’re Allowed to Enjoy Yourself

If you miss a session because you’re watching Elf with your kids, that is not failure.
If you eat Christmas dinner like it’s your last meal on Earth, that is not failure.
If you decide to rest, relax, and be present with your family, that is absolutely the point of the holidays.

Guilt is not a training strategy.
Enjoy what’s in front of you — because these moments matter too.

The Middle Ground: Living Your Life Without Losing Your Rhythm

Here’s how to strike the balance that 99% of people miss:

1. Aim for “Some” Instead of “All or Nothing”

If you normally train 4–5 days per week, aim for 2–3.
If you normally track your nutrition, aim for awareness instead of perfection.

2. Book Your Sessions in Advance

Treat them like appointments. Even in December, future-you appreciates a plan.

3. Walk More Than You Think You Need

Underestimated. Underrated. Undeniably effective.

4. Follow the 80/20 Rule

80% wholesome meals, 20% treat foods… which includes Grandma’s pudding because you only get it once a year.

5. Don’t “Start Over in January” — Start Now, Just Softer

January you will not thank December you for giving up completely.
Keep the engine warm.

The Goal: Start January Feeling Human, Not Like You Need Punishment

Forget the “new year, new me” panic.
If you enjoy the holidays and stay reasonably active, you’ll roll into January feeling:

  • Lightly refreshed
  • Not bloated with regret
  • Already moving well
  • Ready to accelerate instead of restart

That’s the win.

Final Thought: You Don’t Need Extreme — You Just Need Balance

This Christmas, let’s skip the guilt and the all-or-nothing swings.

Train because it feels good.
Rest because you deserve it.
Eat the mince pies because joy is part of health too.
And come back in January already ahead of the game.

See you in the gym
